Enslaved and Dependent Children in Late Ottoman Constantinople (1880-1910s)
My dissertation examines the experiences of children subjected to enslavement and dependency in the city of Ottoman Constantinople during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Focusing on selected urban settings, imperial complexities, affluent households, and entertainment venues, my research explores how enslaved and dependent children maintained their presence in these spaces, even after the Ottoman state engaged in the international abolition movement of the 1880s. I address concepts such as gender, intersectionality, agency, and ownership. By employing the notion of asymmetrical dependency as an analytical framework, I aim to provide a deeper understanding of slavery and slavery-like conditions during this period.
