Friday, February 23, 2024, saw the launch of the German edition of a milestone publication on the history of slavery at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin:
"Welten der Sklaverei. Eine vergleichende Geschichte". See the French original: "Les Mondes de l'Esclavage. Une histoire comparée", edited by Paulin Ismard (with a contribution by BCDSS Research Group Leader Claude Chevaleyre).
BCDSS Principal Investigator Michael Zeuske, who had written the preface to "Welten der Sklaverei", and BCDSS Professor Claudia Jarzebowski, who recently published a review in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, were both on the panel, alongside Paulin Ismard (editor), Esther von der Osten (from the translation team), and Edmund Jacoby (publisher of the German edition).
The discussion involved the process of creating this book, a work about the global history of slavery, its divisions into "Situations", "Comparisons", and "Transformations", and the challenges of translation. Together with the audience, the panelists discussed the cover picture, its associations in the global history of slavery and the sensitivity around it.
