Founded in 1900, the ASOR is a non-profit organization counting more than 50 member institutions and about 2,000 individual members. Its aim is to support both research into and public understanding of the history and cultures of the Near East and the Mediterranean region from the beginnings up until today.
Bethany J. Walker is Professor for Middle Eastern History at the University of Bonn and Director of the Research Unit in Islamic Archaeology at the university’s Department of Islamic Studies. She is currently holding the DFG-funded project “TERRSOC: ‘Reading’ Ancient Landscapes,” a partnership between the Islamic Archaeology Unit and the Institutes of Archaeology at Tel Aviv and Hebrew Universities in Israel, running from 2022 to 2025. Her research interests include rural societies and migration in the Mamluk period, environmental and agricultural history, and frontier studies.
The P. E. MacAllister Field Archaeology Award recognizes and honours Professor Walker's excellent work and research over several decades.
