Lukas Wissel and Jutta Wimmler have been invited to present their research in Klaus Weber and Andreas Bähr’s research colloquium at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) on November 26th. They will speak about a joint book chapter they have been preparing about the role of (coerced) migrants in the failed attempts of the Dutch West India Company to establish cotton and indigo plantations on the West African Gold Coast (Ghana). They will use this example to explore more broadly how knowledge and especially technologies “travelled” across the Atlantic and within Western Africa, and highlight the role of enslaved laborers on both sides of the ocean as keepers of specialized knowledge and skill.
