Prof. Dr. Michael Zeuske will be delivering a presentation titled "A Global Historical Perspective on Slavery: Examining Capitalism, Labor, and Slavery in Cuba (Cienfuegos 1870-1920)" at the upcoming conference, "Slavery and Asymmetrical Dependency in the Global Labor History of Cienfuegos (1870-1900)", jointly organized by the BCDSS and Provincial Committee UNEAC Cienfuegos, in Cuba.
The conference program, titled in Spanish "Esclavitud y dependencia asimétrica en la historia global del trabajo (actividades laborales): Cienfuegos 1870-1900" and scheduled to take place at UNEAC from September 27th to September 30th, 2023, focuses on the historical context of slavery and asymmetric dependency in the global labor history of Cienfuegos during the period from 1870 to 1900. It is organized by the Provincial Committee of UNEAC Cienfuegos and the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies. The conference will be conducted in both English and Spanish.
The topics covered range from the role of Cienfuegos as a significant center of global slavery to the impact of individuals like Tomas Terry Adams on the region, the development and crisis of coffee plantations, the global history of slavery in Cuba, and various aspects of social and cultural history.
Additionally, the program features guided visits to historical sites such as the former Commercial House of José García de la Noceda, which will become a Heritage Interpretation Center, as well as tours to the remnants of demolished sugar mills and buildings associated with slavery in the "Pepito Tey" community and the Botanical Garden.
The conference aims to explore and shed light on the historical intricacies of slavery, labor, and dependency in Cienfuegos from 1870 to 1900, through academic discussions and engagement with historical sites.
