Two-Year Master's Program "Dependency and Slavery Studies"

The Master's program "Dependency and Slavery Studies" is a research-oriented degree program offering a broad perspective on interdisciplinary research on slavery and other forms of strong asymmetrical dependencies through time and space.

We offer a broad and in-depth, unique and innovative Master’s program in "Dependency and Slavery Studies." Our Master students profit from the cutting-edge research on slavery and other forms of strong asymmetrical dependencies conducted in the  interdisciplinary and international environment of the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies/ the Cluster of Excellence "Beyond Slavery and Freedom."

The Program

  • The design of the program allows students to acquire a sound knowledge of relevant historical phenomena as well as the methodological and theoretical tools to pursue their own study and research interests (modules 1–3).
  • In accordance with the broad perspective and innovative character of our program, the study program includes classes on transcultural comparison and current research debates (modules 5 and 6).
  • Classes on case studies (modules 4 and 7) and Compulsory Elective Modules I provide the room to follow your own interests and to explore textual sources, material culture, and data. Special support is offered to improve the respective source language skills and to work on individual sources for the students' own case studies. Besides making it possible to pursue your own regional, temporal research interests, these Compulsory Elective Modules also offer the room to study theoretical and methodological approaches in depth and to aquire further skills, for example in the field of digital humanities.
  • Moreover, the Compulsory Elective Modules II also offer the opportunity to do an internship in national or international institutions. The fourth semester is dedicated to preparing and writing your Master’s thesis.

Admission requirements

Archaeologies, Asian or Islamic Art History, Comparative Religious Studies, Egyptology, English Studies, German Studies, History, History of the Islamicate World, History of Law, Japanese Studies, Korean Studies, Latin American Studies, Slavic Studies, Social Sciences, South East Asian Studies, Theologies, Tibetan Studies, or similar disciplines.

Minimum grade for the first higher education degree qualifying for employment: 2.5

  • C1 proficiency in English (documented by, e.g., a B.A. program taught entirely in English, minimum scores of TOEFL iBT 94/IELTS 7.0)
  • German language proficiency is not required
  • Proficiency in source languages is recommended according to the subjects mentioned above
